Alessia Concetta Marzo

Alessia Marzo is an Environmental Engineering, PhD in Agricultural Engineering and a researcher in the Agricultural hydraulics and watershed protection sector at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment - University of Catania, where she has been carrying out her research activities since 2010.  

Dr. Marzo’s research activity mainly focuses on the following topics: (i) the treatment efficiencies of natural systems (constructed wetlands) for the treatment of different types of wastewater (urban, winery, dairy, and livestock); (ii) the use of innovative substrates in constructed wetland systems; (iii) the reuse of treated wastewater in the agricultural and urban sectors; (iv) the hydraulic functioning of subsurface-flow constructed wetland systems; and (v) the evaluation of clogging and its impact on the hydraulic behavior and treatment efficiencies of constructed wetland systems.

Dr. Alessia Marzo, in addition to her research, is committed to disseminating knowledge, enabling her to achieve social impact. She has been interviewed by national radio stations, local TV channels, and newspapers.

At the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment - University of Catania, she teaches the following courses: Irrigation Systems for Green Areas and Sustainable Management of Water Resources in Agriculture. She has supervised doctoral dissertation, doctoral students and master's students. 

She has obtained the title of Expert in the Subject in Agricultural Hydraulics and Hydraulic-Forestry and received a scientific award by the National Research Council (CNR) – Institute for Agricultural and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean, Italy.

Dr. Marzo is the author of over 40 works, including 19 publications in ISI-indexed journals, with 626 citations from 538 documents and an H-index of 12 (Scopus, December 2025). Dr. Marzo has participated in the most prestigious conferences, organized by major national and international scientific associations, including: AIIA – the Italian Association of Agricultural Engineering, of which she is also a member; IWA – the International Water Association, of which she is also a member; WETPOL – Wetland Pollutant Dynamics and Control; COEE – the International Scientific Conference on Ecological and Environmental Engineering; and IESS – the International Ecological Engineering Society.
