AGRICULTURAL HYDRAULICS

Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: SIMONA CONSOLI

Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Agricultural Hydraulics course, students are expected to be able to carry out the design and verification of long hydraulic pipelines, to carry out a dimensional analysis of hydraulic quantities, to know the characteristics of a swing light and the prerogatives of the state of rest of a fluid.

- Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course students will be able to carry out the design and verification of long hydraulic pipelines (useful for the design of irrigation systems)
- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: students will understand the processes that regulate the motion of liquids and their static conditions.
- Autonomy of judgment: the lessons, full of application examples, will be useful for students to self-evaluate the project work that will be assigned to them
- Communication skills: will be assessed during the oral test
- Learning ability: will be assessed through ongoing and final tests.

Course Structure

The teaching includes lectures and exercises. If the teaching is taught in mixed or remote mode, the necessary variations may be introduced with respect to what was previously stated, in order to respect the planned program, reported in the syllabus.

To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can request a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on the educational objectives and specific needs.
It is also possible to contact the CInAP reference teacher (Centre for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or DSA) of our Department, prof. Anna De Angelis.

Required Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of physics and mathematics (non-preliminary)

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance at lessons is not mandatory, although strongly recommended.

Detailed Course Content

To acquire knowledge on the properties of liquids, the statics of liquids, the laws that regulate the motion of water, the continuous and localized pressure drops that occur in pipes, the measurement of flow through swing lights. The student will acquire skills in the design and verification of pressure pipes and canals used in the irrigation sector.
The main topics covered in the Agricultural Hydraulics Course are the following: properties of liquids; laws of hydrostatics; laws of hydrodynamics; swing lights; hydraulic networks; calculation of pressures and hydrostatic thrusts; verification and sizing of pressure pipelines; verification and sizing of channels.
The contents covered during the course are aimed at enabling students to acquire methodologies for the practical resolution of sizing problems of irrigation systems and for verifying their functioning.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Students will take an ongoing written test.

The test will include both exercises and open and/or multiple choice questions.

Students who pass the written test will be able to directly register for the Hydraulics exam
Agriculture at the first useful appeal.
For those who do not pass the written test, the exam methods will only be in the form of
"oral interview".
The writings are expected at the end of the course (around
end of January).
For all other exam sessions scheduled during the academic year, the form of examination of the Agricultural Hydraulics Course will be

that of the "oral interview".

Votes will be attributed according to the following scheme

Use of references: Has deepened the topics

30-30L

Knowledge and understanding of topic: Excellent knowledge

Ability to analyze and synthesize: Has considerable ability to analyze and synthesize.

Use of references: Important insights.

Drafting design drawings of an infrastructure. The project must be endorsed in advance by the lecturer. Interview.
Evaluation of the student will be based on the following criteria: ability to learn and level of depth of the topics covered, property of synthesis and exposition, and the student's ability to reason.
