Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: Carmelo Giovanni MONACOExpected Learning Outcomes
The main goal of the course consists of providing the analysis ability about:
- geological risk (hydrogeological, seismic, volcanic) evaluation by the definition of hazard control factors related to both geological and geomorphological processes and of the susceptibility of different elements of a region;
- Interpretation of thematic maps with different scales, as well as the recognition of active exogenous processes aiming at both the landscape protection and the evaluation of the hydrogeological risk;
- Prediction, prevenction and mitigation of the hydrogeological risk, also by applying the plannin procedures recommanded by the law in force (e.g. Piano Stralcio per l'Assetto Idrogeologico - P.A.I. at a
regional scale).
- Anti-seismic legislation in Italy.
Course Structure
The course includes 28 hours (4 CFU) of frontal lessons and 28 hours (2 CFU) of practical lessons (exercises, seminars, guided tours and educational field experiences).
If the teaching is given in a mixed or remote way, necessary changes may be introduced with respect to what was previously stated, in order to respect the program envisaged and reported in the syllabus.
As a guarantee of equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, interested students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures, based on their specific needs and on teaching objectives of the discipline. It is also possible to ask the departmental contacts of CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Inclusion - Services for Disabilities and/or DSAs), in the persons of professor Anna De Angelis.

Detailed Course Content
Topics concerning the geological factors of hazard, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and hydrogeological instabilities. In particular, surficial erosion, fluvial dynamics, landslides, coastal erosional processes and flood events. Available data and web sources related to the distribution and the classification of the main geological and surficial instabilities will be presented, such as the PAI (Piano per l'Assetto Idrogeologico by Regione Sicilia) project and the Italian anti-seismic legislation.

Verification of learning takes place through an oral interview. The evaluation of the student's preparation will take place on the basis of the following criteria: learning ability and level of depth of the topics covered, properties of synthesis and exposition, and the student's ability to reason.
