Giuseppe Lazzarino
Giuseppe Lazzarino is Full Professor of Biochemistry (SSD BIO 10) at the University of Catania since 1994. He is presently affiliated at the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences (Division of Medical Biochemistr). He teaches Biochemistry at the Schools of Biology and General Biochemistry at the School of Food Science and Technology. He also teaches Biochemical and molecular apsectes of degenerative pathologies at the School of Sanitary and Cellular-Molecular Biology (Master degree). He is member of the Academic Committee of the PhD course in Biotechnology of Catania University. He has developed significant experience in studies on: -energy metabolism and free radical damage following traumatic brain injury (in animals and human beings) and after ischemia and reperfusion; -biochemical and molecular alterations following concussion (in animals and human beings); –defining and finding valid biochemical markers of neurodegenerations in tissues and body fluids; -set up of new analytical HPLC methods for the determination of main cell metabolites; -relationships between cell energy metabolism and nucleic acid metabolism, either in physiological conditions or following exogenous chemico-physical stimuli. He is author of about 130 publications on international journals. During his activity he spent different research periods working by the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland (Prof. Hassinen and Prof. Peuhkurinen), by the Webb-Waring Institute for Biomedical Research, Denver, Colorado, USA (Prof. J.M. McCord), by the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, University of Texas, Austin, USA (Prof. J.W. Starnes) and by the Department of Physiology, University of Missouri, Columbia, USA (Prof. M.J. Rovetto and Prof C.H. Hardin). He frequently act as a reviewer of manuscripts on topics of his interest for some international journals (Analytical Biochemistry, Talanta, BMC Neurology, Journal of Neurology, PLOSOne, ecc.).
